PV(Photovoltaic) Solar Cells

A solar cell that includes both solar and non-solar sources of light is termed a photovoltaic cell, or a PV cell.

A PV solar cell needs to fulfill only two functions: photo-generation of charge carriers in a light-absorbing material and separation of the charge carriers to a conductive contact that will transmit the electricity. This process of conversion is known as the photovoltaic effect, and the field of research related to PV solar cells is known simply as "photovoltaics".

Throughout history PV solar cells have been used in cases where electrical power from the grid is unavailable, such as in remote areas, Earth orbiting satellites, consumer systems, handheld calculators, wrist watches, remotes, radios, telephones and water pumps.

PV solar cells are currently regarded as one of the key elements towards a sustainable and renewable energy supply. As more and more people become environmentally conscious, we will see, and indeed now are seeing, an increased interest in "alternative" energy sources.

Billions of years old and always there, strange isn't it that we still haven't discovered the limits of sun power. Could it be that the sun's power is unlimited? If so, why are we wasting so much time, money and resources on various forms of unnatural, man-made and non-renewable energy systems?

As old technologies are upgraded and new ones are invented, we will perhaps see a "take over" of renewable forms of energy and usher out the era of the grid.
